Montana woman injured after hitting elk on I-90

A Superior, Mont., woman was hospitalized Sunday night after she ran into a cow elk on Interstate 90 at Kellogg, Idaho, according to authorities. Rosella K. Mellen, 64, was headed west on the freeway about 11 p.m. Sunday when her 1997 Dodge Stratus struck the elk, causing it to roll over the hood of the car and break through the windshield. The animal was torn into two pieces and part of the elk was struck by a second vehicle driven by LeeAnn Stewart, 16, of Silverton, Idaho. Stewart was not injured. Two passengers in the Mellen vehicle were not injured. None of the occupants in the Mellen vehicle were wearing seat belts, according to Idaho State Police. Mellen was initially taken to Shoshone Medical Center and then transferred to Kootenai Medical Center, police said. She was reported in fair condition this morning at Kootenai Medical Center.
