Clarifying Agenda 21

The Spokesman-Review

I am writing to clarify misconceptions concerning U.N. Agenda 21 (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives – ICLEI) and its significance for Spokane.

The ICLEI is a voluntary membership association of local governments committed to advancing climate protection and sustainable growth. There are currently over 1,100 cities in the world which are members. More than 600 of these cities are in the United States. Spokane is one of the cities.

ICLEI provides member cities with information, training, networking possibilities, software and other tools to help members achieve their own sustainable development goals. The cities themselves decide what their goals should be and simply take advantage of the information and guidance that ICLEI provides to achieve their own goals.

The ICLEI has no authority to dictate what these goals should be nor how to achieve them. For additional information about ICLEI please consult its website: www.iclei.org.
