Fire destroys home in northeast Spokane County

Fire destroyed a home Wednesday night about six miles east of Elk in north Spokane County.

Neighbors reported large flames shooting from the roof of the home in the 7200 block of East Walters Road, off North Jackson Road near Mount Spokane, at 9:01 p.m.

Five minutes later, the homeowner called to report the fire. He and his wife and their dog escaped without injury.

The home is a total loss, but they have insurance, said Pat Humphries, spokesman for Spokane County Fire District 4.

“It’s just good they got out,” Humphries said. Firefighters believe the blaze began in the garage. Ammunition in the garage exploded “for quite a while” through the fire, Humphries said.

The cause is under investigation.
