In brief: ‘Cheers to Kids’ benefit next week

WAIKIKI – Olive Crest, a nonprofit organization serving abused, neglected, and at-risk kids in Eastern Washington, will host the annual “Cheers to Kids” next Thursday at the Bozarth Mansion, 12415 E. Fairwood Drive, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will include wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and an opportunity to purchase wines at discounted prices.

Tickets are $45 per person in advance or $50 at the door.

Relay for Life team hosting yard sale

LINWOOD – The Sterling Savings “Hometown Helpers” American Cancer Society Spokane Falls Relay for Life team will have a yard sale May 22 at 7225 N. Fox Point Drive to help raise money for the 2010 team goal.

Members of the community can also donate items to the yard sale. Team members will pick up the items.

Leftover items from the yard sale will be donated to the Arc of Spokane or Goodwill.

The American Cancer Society Spokane Falls Relay for Life will be at the Spokane Falls Community College athletic field on June 4 and June 5.

Cooking classes offered to kids

RIVERSIDE – Main Market Co-op, 44 W. Main Ave., and Community Minded Enterprises will offer free cooking classes for kids, beginning Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Other classes will be held June 6 and June 20.

“Preschoolers in the Kitchen” is a series of hands-on classes for ages 3 to 6, designed to help kids get excited about cooking and eating right. Kids will learn how to put together fruits and vegetables with dips, roll-ups and smoothies.

Groomers taking hair donations

NEVADA/ LIDGERWOOD – The Yuppy Puppy, 9423 N. Newport Highway, is challenging all area grooming shops in donating pet hair to create oil spill booms and mats in light of the Gulf Coast oil disaster.

The booms and mats are being used along the Gulf Coast to clean up the spill and hair is being donated from all over the world.

The Yuppy Puppy is offering to ship the hair, but help is needed in collecting the hair. Donations are appreciated.

Show offers help to working women

EMERSON/GARFIELD – Community Health Education and Resources will host the Working Women’s Survival Show next Thursday at the Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lincoln St., from 5 to 9 p.m.

The event will feature a presentation from Christina Geithner, Ph.D., a professor in the Gonzaga University Department of Human Physiology, on the need for balance between work and life.

The show will include appetizers, chocolate samplings, chair massages, eyebrow shaping, paraffin hand treatment, free spinal cold laser treatment and more.

Tickets are $25.
