North Idaho College’s student-run newspaper was named the top publication of 2009 in the two-year college category by the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Sentinel won the award for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper in its category at the National Mark of Excellence Awards.

In addition, Sentinel staff members Loren Kelly and Kalyn Lovlyn, both of Coeur d’Alene, won first-place for general column writing and sports column writing, respectively. Jake Donahue of Portland was a finalist in the breaking news category, and Eli Francovich of Post Falls was a finalist in feature writing.

The awards will be presented Oct. 4 in Las Vegas.
