Home damaged by smoke

Red Cross assisting resident
By The Spokesman-Review

A home in the 5400 block of North Whitehouse was damaged by fire today and the female resident is being assisted by the Red Cross.

The exact cause of the fire has not been determined, said Spokane Fire Battalion Chief Bob Green. “The fire was believed to have started somewhere around the TV set,” he said.

There was little damage from fire but there was “a lot of really noxious black smoke. It covered just about everything on the first floor,” he said.

The fire was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Why are there so many home fires in Spokane? I’ve never lived in a city that had anywhere near so many fires. I’m wondering why?

Are the homes old and dilapidated with bad wiring that nobody ever repairs? Do they avoid teaching basic fire prevention? Is the Fire Department so busy fighting fires that they have no time to go around talking to building owners and doing fire prevention inspections?

Are people insuring it up and burning it down during tight economic times?

I’m just wondering what is going on here that so many homes and businesses are burning?
