Hiawatha trail opens Saturday for season

The Route of the Hiawatha, a 15-mile rail trail that straddles the Montana-Idaho border, is set to open for the season on Saturday.

“This is only the second time in 13 years that the trail has opened the weekend before Memorial Day weekend,” said Phil Edholm of Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area, citing the region’s light mountain snowpack.

The trail, which includes 10 tunnels and seven trestles as high as 230 feet, attracts visitors from around the world.
