In brief: Woods will try to win his third British Open

Golf: Tiger Woods has added the British Open to his summer schedule.

Woods has a chance to become the first player in the 150-year history of the British Open to win three times at St. Andrews, where golf’s oldest championship will be held July 15-18. He added the British Open to the schedule on his website.

Woods, who withdrew from the final round of The Players Championship on May 9 with a neck injury, also has the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the AT&T National at Aronimink on his schedule.

Former owner dies

Sports people: Bob Breitbard, who owned the NBA’s San Diego Rockets and was a high school classmate and close friend of Ted Williams, has died of natural causes. He was 91.

Breitbard owned the Rockets from their expansion season of 1967-68 until he sold them in 1971 to Texas businessmen who moved the team to Houston.

NHL’s Panthers name new general manager: The Florida Panthers have named Dale Tallon, who has been with the Blackhawks for three decades, as the club’s new general manager, replacing Randy Sexton less than a year after he was officially named to the post.

Johnson wants deal

Miscellany: Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson wants a new contract.

The Pro Bowl wideout skipped the team’s first voluntary practice and no one is sure when he’ll join the team.

Johnson has five years left on an eight-year contract worth $60 million.

Michigan to issue response: Michigan will publicly release its response to NCAA allegations of major rules violations against football coach Rich Rodriguez next week.

Athletic director David Brandon said there will be “total transparency” and that any school-imposed sanctions will be revealed in the report.

Australian leads Tour of California: Brett Lancaster of Australia surged ahead in the waning meters and claimed the rain-soaked second stage and the overall race lead in the Tour of California at Santa Rosa, Calif.

Levi Leipheimer, the three-time defending race winner, and teammate Lance Armstrong both finished in the lead group.

German soccer captain out: Germany captain Michael Ballack will miss this summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa because of an ankle injury.
