WSU clubs USC

Patrick Claussen went 4 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Matt Fanelli added three hits and four runs as Washington State (29-18, 12-10 Pac-10) used 23 hits to blow out USC (25-29, 5-17) 20-7 Friday in Pac-10 baseball action in Pullman.

The Cougars used a 10-run fifth inning to open things up with the big hit being a two-run double from Matt Argyropoulos.

•Billy Moon had three hits and Mark Castellitto doubled twice with three RBIs and two runs scored as Gonzaga (18-32, 6-10) doubled up Loyola Marymount (22-27, 4-12) 8-4 in West Coast Conference action at Patterson Complex in Spokane.

Cody Martin went 81/3 innings to earn the win, allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

•Chase Anselment hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting Washington (27-24, 10-12) to a 13-11 victory over Oregon (33-19, 10-12) in Pac-10 play in Seattle. The Huskies scored two in the ninth and four in the 10th to extend the game twice before winning it in the 11th.

Softball

Danielle Lawrie’s two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning set the tone as defending champion Washington (46-6) opened its NCAA tournament run with a 3-0 victory over North Dakota State (33-24) in Seattle.

Lawrie allowed four hits and struck out 13 to earn her national-best 21st shutout of the season for the Huskies, who play North Carolina today in regional play . in Seattle. The Tar Heels (41-18) beat Nebraska (29-28) 1-0 on a no-hitter by Danielle Spaulding.

•Oregon won its opening-round game 1-0 against Auburn as Shadle Park’s Allie Burger crossed the plate in the sixth inning on a squeeze bunt for the only run in Atlanta.

•The opening round of the NWAACC tournament was postponed because of rain and will be played today starting at 9:30 a.m. at Delta Park in Portland.

Golf

Darren Wallace shot a 3-under-par 69 in his second round as Washington increased its lead to 16 strokes with one round remaining at the NCAA West Regional men’s tournament at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Kevin Tucker of Washington State bettered his score by three strokes on the second day, shooting 3 over at the par-72, 7,104-yard course. He sits in a tie for 51st with a score of 153.

•NIC finished with a three-round score of 921, leaving the Cardinals in a tie for 17th place after the final day of the NJCAA Championships was canceled because of severe weather at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Owens Crossroads, Ala.

North Idaho’s Branden Dalton tied for eighth with a 217.

Soccer

The Spokane Spiders (0-3) could not solve their scoring woes against the Portland Timbers (3-0), falling 3-0 in Premier Development League action at Albi Stadium. The Spiders have been outscored 8-0 in their three losses.
