Cook guides Cougs

Freshman Travis Cook (1-3) allowed two runs in 62/3 innings to notch his first career victory as the Washington State Cougars (33-18) rolled to their seventh straight win – 3-2 over the Portland Pilots (31-18) in nonconference play Wednesday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Pilots starter Kyle Kraus (9-3). Cody Bartlett walked with one out and Derek Jones singled. Following a double steal, Bartlett scored on a groundout by Matt Fanelli.

Bartlett stretched the lead to 2-0 when he doubled in the third and scored on another Fannelli groundout.

The Cougs’ final run came in the fourth when Jacobs led off with a single and later scored on an error.

•The NCAA men’s baseball championship selection show will be televised by ESPN at 9:30 a.m. PDT Monday.

WSU, ranked 20th, is hoping to earn an at-large berth into the tourney.

Tennis

Washington State University’s Elisabeth Fournier and Liudmila Vasilieva saw their seasons end during the first round of the NCAA Women’s Singles Championship in Athens, Ga.

Fournier, a sophomore, lost 6-0, 6-4 to Duke’s Ellah Nze.

Vasilieva, a freshman, fell to Florida’s Allie Will 6-1, 6-1.

Football

The Menlo College Oaks of Atherton, Calif., announced they will leave the Northwest Conference as an associate member in football.

The Oaks had been dual members of the NAIA and the NCAA, but they’ll now consolidate all of their sports programs under the NAIA banner.
