Memorial Day events planned
The following events are taking place throughout the region over the Memorial Day weekend:
Today
Flag-raising ceremony: El Katif Shrine’s Legion of Honor will be the honor guard at the flag-raising ceremony in celebration of Memorial Day. Boy Scout Troop 19 from Spokane then will place American flags at the graves of veterans buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N. Wall St. Free. (509) 467-5496.

Remembering Roy Rogers and Other Western Heroes: Western artifacts and memorabilia, entertainment at 2 p.m. each day in Heritage Chapel; performance by the Rockin’ B Ranch; veterans display, aerospace display, antique and classic car display, Tree of Remembrance, refreshments and band concert on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Cross of Inspiration at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. , 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Maryhill Winery: Ninth annual Memorial Day weekend celebration. Featuring wine tastings, special case discounts and free live music all weekend with performances by RaChiChi (today), Carlyle (Sunday) and Wayman Chapman (Monday). Memorial weekend festivities: Red Cross exhibit honoring the 1,000 Spokane women named “Gray Ladies” who were trained and offered patient support during World War II. Kootenai County: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889 hosts ceremonies and wreath-laying in Veterans Park at the Third Street Bell in Coeur d’Alene, 9 a.m.; 10 a.m. ceremony at St. Thomas Cemetery on Sherman Avenue, hosted by VFW Post 889; 11 a.m. ceremony at Forest Cemetery on Government Way in Coeur d’Alene, also city of Hayden ceremony at City Hall on Government Way; 2 p.m. ceremony at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 7315 N. Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery: Presented by the Melvin M. Smith Detachment, Marine Corps League of Spokane, along with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51. Guest speaker is Capt. John Stevens, who is the inspector-instructor of “P” Battery, 5th Battalion, 14th Marines located at the Navy-Marine Corps Readiness Center. Lunch available for $7 at VFW Post 51, 300 W.
