From Staff And Wire Reports

A 21-year-old Coeur d’Alene woman was injured in a crash on Idaho Highway 53 and Prairie Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Idaho State Police, Lauren M. Smith, of Coeur d’Alene, was waiting at the intersection to make a westbound turn onto Highway 53. An eastbound semitruck was turning onto Prairie Avenue at the same time, blocking Smith’s view of traffic on Highway 53.

Michael D. Smith, 56, of Hayden, was traveling eastbound just behind the semi. When Lauren Smith attempted to pull out onto the highway, she pulled out in front of Michael Smith, according to the ISP.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Lauren Smith was transported to Kootenai Medical Center following the crash. Michael D. Smith wasn’t injured.

Wrestling match turns deadly

A fishing trip and a wrestling match proved a deadly combination for one man early Sunday morning.

Three men had been fishing at Banks Lake, just off state Route 155, near Coulee City, Wash., and Sunday morning one challenged the other to a wrestling match, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

At the time, the three were intoxicated, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A third man tried to dissuade Anatoliy P. Mitskavich, 41, and Valeriy Blinkov, 46, both of Auburn, Wash., from wrestling but had no luck. While wrestling, Mitskavich stopped breathing and died, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Blinkov and the bystander immediately called 911.

Both cooperated with authorities and Blinkov was released to his family.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake.

Sheriff’s Office pays for lost keys

SOAP LAKE, Wash. – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office had to pay to replace an inmate’s locks and keys after a deputy lost the man’s keys.

Authorities say Michael Eugene Power was arrested for violating a protection order. Before transporting Power, a deputy placed Power’s keys and wallet on top of the closed trunk of his patrol vehicle.

When the deputy was ordered to respond to a different case, he took off without grabbing the keys and wallet. The wallet was recovered and returned to Power, but the keys have not been found. The Sheriff’s Office has paid more than $400 to replace the keys and locks for Power’s home and vehicle.

‘Cowboy’ author charged again

SEATTLE – King County prosecutors in Seattle have charged the man who wrote “Drugstore Cowboy” with first-degree robbery in yet another pharmacy heist.

James Fogle, 73, was arrested with another man Tuesday night. Prosecutors allege they demanded narcotics, then tied up employees at a pharmacy in Redmond. Court papers say Fogle had a BB gun and the second man had a handgun.

Also charged was 45-year-old Shannon Benn. Benn and Fogle are being held in the King County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Fogle has spent much of his life in prison, where he wrote “Drugstore Cowboy.” Filmmaker Gus Van Sant turned the novel into the acclaimed 1989 film starring Matt Dillon. The work was loosely based on Fogle’s life.
