In brief: Blazers end road trip on high note

NBA: Wes Matthews scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half to help the Portland Trail Blazers end their four-game road trip with a 90-76 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.

Brandon Roy added 17 points, LaMarcus Aldridge 14, Dante Cunningham 14, Andre Miller 12 and Armon Johnson 10 for Portland.

Corey Maggette led the Bucks with 16 points.

Matthews was the first off the bench and had seven points in the first quarter and then added nine more in the second.

• Celtics cruise past Pistons: Rajon Rondo had nine points and 17 assists to lead the Boston Celtics to a 109-86 rout of the Detroit Pistons at Aubern Hills, Mich.

Kevin Garnett scored 22 points and Paul Pierce added 21 for Boston.

Former Gonzaga standout Austin Daye scored 16 points as one of five Pistons in double figures. Rodney Stuckey (Eastern Washington) added 15 points and three assists to help the hobbled squad.

• Magic, Knicks postponed: The Orlando Magic-New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden was postponed because of safety concerns after debris fell into the arena during overnight cleaning of asbestos-related materials.

• Arenas expected back: The Washington Wizards expect Gilbert Arenas to return to practice today after missing the first three games of the season with a strained tendon in his right ankle.

• Bryant says he’ll play in London: Kobe Bryant told U.S. basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski that he would play in the Olympics in 2012 if the Americans want him there.

“You guys want me there, I am there and I’m ready to defend,” Bryant said on Krzyzewski’s SIRIUS XM show.

NHL: Mathieu Garon stopped 29 shots for his 17th career shutout, extending his strong play at home in leading the Blue Jackets to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Columbus, Ohio.

Rick Nash, Derick Brassard and Kyle Wilson had goals and Jake Voracek added two assists for the Blue Jackets.

• Devils lose Parise: New Jersey left wing Zach Parise is going to be sidelined three months with a knee injury.

The Devils announced that Parise underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus.

Moore unanimous All-American again

Women’s basketball: Maya Moore, UConn senior, became the second player to be a two-time unanimous choice on the Associated Press women’s basketball preseason All-America team, receiving all 40 votes from a national media panel.

• Lynx awarded first draft pick: The Minnesota Lynx won the WNBA lottery and will select first in the league’s 2011 draft. It’s the third time they’ve won it in the last six years, including the second straight.

Zenyatta made early favorite at BC Classic

Miscellany: Zenyatta, the horse with the 19-0 record was made the early 8-5 favorite in a field of 12 for Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

• AVP beach volleyball files for bankruptcy: The AVP pro beach volleyball tour has filed for bankruptcy protection.

According to papers filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles on Friday, the tour said it has less than $184,000 in assets and $4.97 million in liabilities. Among those owed money are Olympic gold medal winners Todd Rogers, Phil Dalhausser and Kerri Walsh.

• Penn State mascot dismissed: The man behind Penn State’s Nittany Lion mascot has been fired.

Penn State assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson says cheerleading coach Curtis White has confirmed the dismissal of mascot Clint Gyory because he broke a team rule.
