Area roundup: Fresno St. sends Idaho soccer team home

Seniors Bradlee DeShane and Claudia Cardenas scored during the first 14 minutes to launch sixth-seeded Fresno State (8-8-4) toward a 3-0 win over third-seeded Idaho to open the Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament at Ruston, La.

Nicole Duff added a goal from 5 yards out in the 72nd minute for the Bulldogs, who extended their unbeaten streak to six games.

FSU outshot the Vandals 11-1 in the first half and 11-7 in the second.

The Bulldogs will play second-seeded Utah State (9-6-5) in today’s semifinals. San Jose State is the top seed.

The Vandals (14-7) had the best record in school history and earned five all-conference awards during Wednesday’s pretourney banquet.

Volleyball

Allison Walker and Alicia Milo had 22 kills apiece as Idaho (11-11, 6-5 Western Athletic Conference) outlasted Nevada 3-2 at Virginia Street Gym in Reno, Nev.

The Wolf Pack (13-2, 7-5) won the third game 37-35 to take a 2-1 lead, but the Vandals held tight in the fourth game (25-22) and cruised 15-8 in the final.

Jennifer Feicht added 64 assists and Cassie Hamilton 29 digs for the Vandals.

• Kayla Lommori had 18 kills, nine digs and four blocks as Santa Clara (13-11, 4-6 West Coast Conference) handed Gonzaga (2-24, 0-10) its 22nd consecutive loss with a 3-1 decision at Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.

Jessie Genger and Schylur Edelman had nine kills apiece for the Zags.

Men’s basketball

North Idaho opened its season with a 69-62 win at Miles (Mont.) CC (1-1).

Women’s basketball

North Idaho opened its season with a 74-54 win at Miles (Mont.) CC (1-1).
