Cougs edge Huskies in OT soccer match

Micaela Castain scored in the 99th minute in the first overtime Friday to lift the Washington State women’s soccer team (7-13, 2-7) to a 2-1 victory over Pac-10 rival Washington (11-8, 4-5) in Pullman.

Castain scored the tying goal in the 84th minute to force overtime against the Huskies, before hitting the winner 15 minutes later to give WSU its fifth win in its last seven tries against the Huskies.

Over those seven matches, WSU has not lost, going 5-0-2.

• Emi Yamamoto scored a pair of goals and added an assist on a third as Laramie County CC defeated North Idaho (10-5-3) 3-1 at the NJCAA District tournament in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Demi Wignot gave NIC an early lead, but LCCC rallied to score three consecutive goals, including both by Yamamoto in the second half. The loss ended the Cardinals’ season.

Men’s soccer

Patrick Wallen converted a penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to help visiting San Diego (7-7-2, 4-4-1) hand Gonzaga (4-13, 1-9) a 2-1 defeat in WCC play.

Wallen scored both goals for USD, including the winner in the 90th minute.

• Chandler Hoffman scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute to lead No. 12 UCLA (12-4-1, 6-2) to a 1-0 victory over Pac-10 foe Washington (9-6-1, 3-5) in Seattle.

• Otero (16-1-1) defeated North Idaho (9-8-2) 5-3, eliminating the Cardinals from the postseason in the semifinals of the NJCAA West Districts in Yuma, Ariz.

Men’s basketball

Michael Hale led all scorers with 14 points and added three assists and North Idaho (2-0) won in the first round of the Williston tournament, beating Lake Region State 75-50 in Williston, N.D.

The Cardinals held LRSC to 17 first-half points and 32 percent shooting for the game.

Women’s basketball

Alyssa Charlston had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds in her Idaho debut as the Vandals toppled Lewis-Clark State 73-58 in Moscow in their only exhibition game before the start of the regular season.

Senior Rachele Kloke finished with nine points and four rebounds for the Vandals, who open the regular season at home against Eastern Oregon on Nov. 13.

• Kama Griffitts tallied 16 points, shooting 4 of 12 from 3-point range, as North Idaho (2-0) beat the Lake Region State Royals 78-62 at the Williston tournament in Williston, N.D.

Tugce Canitez also scored 16 points for the Cardinals, adding eight rebounds and three assists.

Volleyball

Kaimi Rocha’s 17 kills and 12 digs led Whitworth (16-6, 13-2) to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 sweep of Willamette (8-16, 4-11) in Salem, Ore., and brought the Pirates within one win of clinching the Northwest Conference title.

The Pirates close the season today against Lewis & Clark, needing a victory over the Pioneers to earn the NWC’s top spot.

• Kindra Carlson finished with 15 kills and 10 digs and Becky Perry added 11 kills as No. 11 Washington (18-5, 7-5) ended its two-match losing streak with a sweep of Washington State (6-16, 0-12) in Pac-10 play in Pullman.

• Tina Strahinic had 20 kills and 10 digs, leading North Idaho (25-6) to a 3-2 victory over Snow (18-14) in the Region 18 tournament semifinals in Coeur d’Alene.

With the win, NIC earned an automatic bid to nationals, regardless of the outcome of today’s championship match against Salt Lake CC (26-5), which beat Southern Idaho (23-11) 3-2 in the other semifinal match.

• Ashley Semler finished with 19 digs and Karis Gamache added 17 assists as Community Colleges of Spokane (28-9, 10-2) swept Treasure Valley (15-23, 1-12) in Ontario, Ore.
