Area roundup: Whits claim volleyball title

Kaimi Rocha tallied 16 kills and 10 digs and Whitworth (17-6, 14-2) clinched the Northwest Conference volleyball title on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Lewis & Clark (10-16, 6-10) in Portland.

The Pirates earned the top spot over Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran, which both finished tied for second at 13-3.

Whitworth will find out Monday its assignment for the NCAA Division III tournament.

• Allison Walker had 27 kills and 11 digs as Idaho (12-11, 7-5) pulled out the fifth game 21-19 to beat Utah State (18-8, 6-7) 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference play in Logan, Utah.

• Malina Terrell tallied 26 kills and three blocks and San Francisco (4-20, 2-10 WCC) defeated visiting Gonzaga (2-25, 0-11) 3-1, handing the Zags their 23rd consecutive setback.

• Whitney Phillips tallied a match-high 16 kills with 22 digs and Portland State (16-8, 11-2) defeated Eastern Washington (7-16, 6-7) 3-2 in Big Sky action in Cheney.

• Joni Nagy had 17 kills, and Kealy Johnson had 10 kills and 35 digs and Community Colleges of Spokane (29-9, 11-2) upended NWAACC East leader Blue Mountain (37-5, 12-1) 3-1 in Pendleton, Ore. CCS remains in second place behind BMCC.

Women’s basketball

Katelan Redmon and Jazmine Redmon each scored 16 points to lead Gonzaga to a 115-51 romp over visiting Western Oregon in its lone exhibition game before the start of the regular season.

• Amy Warbick finished with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range and Tugce Canitez added 11 points and 13 rebounds as North Idaho crushed Williston State 82-43 at the Williston (N.D.) Tournament to open the season 3-0.

Men’s basketball

Brandon Wiley scored 18 points to lead Idaho to a 70-59 victory over Lewis-Clark State in its second exhibition game of the season in Moscow.

• Tyrone White tied for game-high honors with 25 points and added 10 rebounds as North Idaho (3-0) knocked off host Williston State 77-58 at the Williston (N.D.) tournament. Michael Hale added 13 points for NIC.

• Matthew Bryan-Amaning scored a team-high 20 points with six rebounds and Justin Holiday added 18 points as Washington cruised to a 97-76 victory over Saint Martin’s in exhibition play in Seattle.

Men’s soccer

Jed Jacobson had two assists to give Whitman (11-6-3, 9-3-2) an early 2-0 lead and the visiting Missionaries held Whitworth (10-6-2, 7-5-2) in check in their NWC finale, winning 2-1. Travis Gutierrez scored for Whitworth.

• Andrew Mastronardi scored the first and third goals for Community Colleges of Spokane (10-6-4, 7-4-2), which blanked Columbia Basin (11-3-4, 9-1-3) 3-0 to close its regular season at Spokane Falls CC.

The win, combined with a Walla Walla loss, gives CCS third place in the NWAACC East and a spot in the NWACC tournament. CCS will play at Bellevue CC (11-4-2) on Wednesday.

Women’s soccer

Allie Smith capped the Whitworth (14-5-1, 12-3-1) scoring with two goals as the Pirates locked up a tie for second place with a 4-1 victory over visiting Lewis & Clark (3-13-4, 1-13-2) in their Northwest Conference finale. The Pirates finished with 14 wins for the fourth straight season.

• Lauren Maris scored two straight goals and host San Francisco (5-13-2, 1-4-2) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat Gonzaga (8-11-1, 3-4) 3-1 in their West Coast Conference match.

• KieOsha Avery-Winchester scored goals in the 69th and 72nd minutes to lift Columbia Basin CC (10-5-4, 9-2-4) to a 3-1 victory over Community Colleges of Spokane (10-5-3, 7-5-3) at SFCC. Despite the loss, CCS finished the season in third place in the East, and opens postseason play Wednesday at Peninsula CC in Port Angeles, Wash.

Wrestling

No. 2 Boise State recorded a pair of pins and two technical falls, scoring the first 33 points to beat North Idaho 33-12 at Mead High School. Jamelle Jones (197 pounds) and Marcel Dubose (285) each earned victories by decision for the Cardinals.
