In brief: Bear traps set in Gig Harbor

GIG HARBOR, Wash. – Two bear traps baited with doughnuts and maple syrup remain set at Gig Harbor while state Fish and Wildlife Department agents look for the bear that attacked a woman.

Department spokesman Craig Bartlett said Tuesday the traps will remain this week. Agents plan to kill the bear because it attacked a person. They also want to test for disease.

A bear was reportedly sighted Monday near the Boys & Girls Club and students at nearby Discovery Elementary were kept inside for afternoon recess.

The Peninsula School District called for staffers Tuesday to keep students away from playgrounds near wooded areas.

The woman who was attacked Sunday while walking her dog was treated for cuts and bites at a Tacoma hospital.

Naked stranger hid in closet

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A Corvallis couple woke Monday to find a naked stranger in their closet.

Police say 21-year-old Nicholas Buekea sneaked out of a friend’s basement apartment, climbed around a locked door to access a staircase and made his way to a third-floor apartment.

The Gazette Times reported that the apartment’s residents – who were not identified – found items out of place on Monday morning and Buekea, naked, inside their closet. Buekea struggled with one of the apartment’s residents and fled.

Police said a group of people found Buekea on Monday and gave him a pair of shorts.

Buekea was found by police and taken to a local hospital, where he was being evaluated.
