Rain, not snow, forecasted tonight

Snow has been taken out of the forecast for the rest of the week, while rainfall is expected in Spokane from about 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. tonight. Rain is also expected in Coeur d’Alene. Previously forecasters were calling for snow levels as low as 2,000 feet tonight, but the latest afternoon forecast has removed any mention of snow at lower elevations in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene areas. However, rain and snow mixed could fall in cities such as Sandpoint and Newport to the north. Snow levels should drop to about 2,500 to 3,000 feet in northern mountains tonight. Fog settled over much of the Columbia Basin to the west and southwest of Spokane early today while low clouds covered much of the urban area today with some sun breaks. At 7 a.m., it was foggy at Spokane International Airport with visibility at two miles. Spokane has 70 percent chance of rain tonight from an incoming storm off the Pacific Ocean. Rainfall amounts will be light. Coeur d’Alene has an 80 percent chance of rain before 10 p.m. Highs may reach the middle 40s Friday with a low of 34 tonight in Spokane and 36 in Coeur d’Alene. Precipitation chances decline on Friday withl mostly cloudy skies. A frontal system on Saturday could bring more light rain to be followed by cloudy weather on Sunday. Highs should be near 40 on Saturday going to the middle 40s on Sunday. Lows will be in the upper 20s. Monday could see yet another short-lived band of precipitation.
