In brief: Bonner’s 3s help Spurs beat Thunder

NBA: Matt Bonner scored 21 points and just missed the Spurs franchise record by hitting all seven of his 3-point shots, helping visiting San Antonio stretch its winning streak to seven games with a 117-104 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night.

Bonner swished home three of his 3s during a 21-8 run to open the fourth quarter, and the NBA’s best 3-point shooting team went 6 for 8 from behind the arc to pull away in the final period.

Tony Parker scored 24 points, Manu Ginobili added 21 and Richard Jefferson had 18 for the Spurs.

Kevin Durant had a season-low 23 points and Russell Westbrook scored 19 for the Thunder.

• Suns beat Lakers in a hail of 3-pointers: Jason Richardson scored 34 points and the visiting Phoenix Suns hit the second-most 3-pointers in NBA history to hold off the Los Angeles Lakers 121-116.

Steve Nash added 21 points and 13 assists, Channing Frye had 20 points, and Hedo Turkoglu had 17 points for the Suns.

The Suns were 22 of 40 from 3-point range, just missing the league record of 23 set by Orlando against Sacramento in January 2009.

• Stuckey scores 17 in win: Rodney Stuckey scored 17 points and Ben Gordon hit a late 3 that sent Detroit over host Sacramento 100-94.

Gordon’s 3-pointer from the corner put the Pistons ahead 99-94 with 23.9 seconds left. He finished with 16 points.

Tayshaun Prince had 14 points for the Pistons, Richard Hamilton scored 13 and Charlie Villanueva added 11.

Tyreke Evans scored 20 points and Carl Landry had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Kings.

No. 1 Duke opens with rout of Princeton

College Basketball: Nolan Smith scored 22 points and No. 1 Duke opened its season by beating Princeton 97-60 in the first round of the CBE Classic in Durham, N.C.

Freshman Kyrie Irving had 17 points and Kyle Singler added 16 for the Blue Devils, who shot 55 percent and hit 14 3-pointers.

The reigning national champions did it with defense, forcing 27 turnovers and turning those into 36 points.

• No. 1 UConn tops Holy Cross for 79th straight win: Tiffany Hayes scored 32 points and top-ranked Connecticut extended its winning streak to 79 games with a season-opening 117-37 rout of visiting Holy Cross.

Maya Moore added 21 points and moved into second place behind Tina Charles on the school’s career scoring list.

NHL: Marian Gaborik scored his first three goals of the season, and the New York Rangers beat the visiting Edmonton Oilers 8-2 to spoil the return of former coach Tom Renney.

Alex Frolov scored twice, and Brian Boyle, Artem Anisimov and Ruslan Fedotenko added goals for New York.

• Lecavalier to have hand surgery: Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier will have surgery to expedite the healing of his broken right hand.

Dr. Tom Graham of the Cleveland Clinic will perform the procedure today. The team’s original timetable of Lecavalier missing three to four weeks has not changed.

The center hurt the hand in Thursday’s game at Washington. The break occurred near the knuckle of the index finger.

Pirates choose Hurdle as new manager

Miscellany: The Pittsburgh Pirates will introduce former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle as their new manager at a news conference today.

Hurdle, the batting coach for the A.L. champion Texas Rangers, will replace John Russell, who was fired the day after the Pirates completed a 105-loss season.

• Dallas beats Galaxy, advances to MLS Cup: David Ferreira had a goal and an assist to help FC Dallas advance to the MLS Cup with a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference final in Carson, Calif.

George John and Marvin Chavez also scored and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made six saves for Dallas.

• Police: 3 Southern Miss. football players shot: Three University of Southern Mississippi football players were shot during a fight at a nightclub, and all three are in fair condition at a local hospital, police said.

Linebackers Martez Smith and Tim Green and defensive end Deddrick Jones were shot just after 1:30 a.m., Hattiesburg police spokesman Sgt. Allen Murray said.

No arrests have been made, and police did not comment on possible suspects. Murray said it’s possible the shooting was gang-related.

• Soderling beats Monfils in Paris Masters final: Robin Soderling of Sweden won his first Masters 1000 title by beating Gael Monfils of France 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the Paris Masters final. The fourth-seeded Swede hit a forehand volley on match point, then fell to the ground on his back to celebrate the most prestigious of his six career titles.

• Russia beats Brazil in final at volleyball worlds: Russia successfully defended its title in the women’s world volleyball championship, defeating top-ranked Brazil in five sets in the final in Tokyo.

Russia captured its seventh world title with the 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11 win over the Olympic champions.

• Grange wins World Cup slalom: Jean-Baptiste Grange of France held off Andre Myhrer of Sweden to win the season-opening World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland, by 0.33 seconds.
