In brief: M’s schedule memorial

Baseball: The Seattle Mariners have scheduled a free public “celebration of life” ceremony to remember late broadcaster Dave Niehaus on Dec. 11 at Safeco Field.

The doors open at noon for the event that starts at 1:10 p.m.

The program will include tributes from the Niehaus family and Mariners players.

Idaho changes to points system

Colleges: The University of Idaho Athletic Department is adopting a system of giving the best seats to the biggest donors.

The university notified athletic boosters and season-ticket holders this week about the new priority seating system, designed to raise more money for student- athletes and Vandals sports programs.

As part of the new system, all season-ticket seats at the Kibbie Dome and other venues will be cleared and reassigned.

LC forward signs with Saint Mary’s

Basketball: Hayley Hendricksen, a 6-foot forward for Lewis and Clark, signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Saint Mary’s.

Hendricksen, who played her freshman season at Northwest Christian, averaged 11.4 points and eight rebounds for LC’s state-qualifying team last season and had a big summer for the Spokane Stars club team.

“It seemed like a great fit,” she said of her visit to Moraga, Calif., over the weekend.

She also considered Seattle Pacific, Portland, George Fox and Gonzaga.

Gonzaga announced the signing of Maiki Viela, a 5-6 guard from Lahaina, Hawaii, where she was picked Gatorade Player of the Year.
