Education Notebook: Two schools win award
The state Superintendent’s Office recently honored two North Side elementary Title I schools for their commitment to students and their exceptional hard work.
A press release from Spokane Public Schools announced Whitman was named a 2010 National Title I Distinguished School for exceeding adequate yearly progress for two or more years in math. Whitman was also awarded $10,000.
Logan was given a 2010 State Title I Distinguished School award for exceeding adequate yearly progress for two or more years in reading. Logan received $5,000.
Meadow Ridge holds tribute to veterans, their families
Students and staff at Meadow Ridge Elementary School in the Mead School District honored veterans and the spouses of local troops currently serving overseas on Nov. 10 with two special school assemblies.
The school invited the Fairchild Honor Guard and Cub Scout Pack 281, which presented the flag. Students also sang patriotic songs to share their appreciation and thanks.
Meadow Ridge students, staff and families also celebrated the event by donating funds to send a local World War II veteran to Washington, D.C., in the Honor Flight program.
Festival showcases students in high school performing arts
High school visual and performing arts students will come together to celebrate their creative talent at the Festival of the Arts, beginning Monday.
According to a press release from Spokane Public Schools, student honor ensembles from Ferris, Lewis and Clark, North Central, Rogers and Shadle Park high schools will start at 9 a.m., rehearsing with the all-city band, orchestra and choir, including guest conductors.
The students will also spend time with the Chris Neal Band, the Washington State University Orchestra and the Gonzaga University Choir.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the high school honor ensembles will continue to rehearse with the special guests in preparation for a 7:30 p.m. concert, to be held at the INB Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
Theater students will have an opportunity to tour the Performing Arts Center and attend workshops throughout the day, taught by members of the stagehands union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
Karen Mobley of the Spokane Arts Commission will lead a student workshop for the visual-art students.
Photography students will have an opportunity to enhance their skills in a workshop by Don Hamilton.
The art and photography students will use what they’ve learned in workshops to create artwork and will then be given the opportunity to display their work at the Spokane Symphony’s education concert held in February.
St. Patrick School plans ‘Turkey Bingo’ on Friday
It’s time for turkey, but the students, staff and their families at St. Patrick Catholic School, 2706 E. Queen Ave., are having turkey before Thanksgiving, with “Turkey Bingo.” The fun begins Friday in the school cafeteria. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first game will start at 7.
Attendees will not only have the chance to play regular bingo games, with an opportunity to win a variety of gift baskets, but also for a chance to win a frozen turkey just in time for Thanksgiving.
