Prep roundup: Eagles take third in state with shutout

Katie Baran scored two unassisted goals and the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) girls soccer team (16-5-1) avenged its loss in the State 1A semifinals by beating Vashon Island 2-0 for third place Saturday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup, Wash.

Courtney Kovalesky recorded the shutout for the Eagles, who used a goal from Baran to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute, before she scored the winner in the 60th minute.

• State 2A: Caroline Brawner had one goal and two assists and Archbishop Murphy beat East Valley (15-7) 4-0 in the third-place match of the state tournament at Sparks Stadium.

“Today was just kind of going through the motions, it was tough to get up,” said coach Gabe Escobar, whose Knights fell to White River 1-0 on Friday.

Girls basketball

Lewiston tournament: Karlee Wilson scored a game-high 18 points and Trisha Phillips added 16 points with three 3-pointers as host Lewiston (2-0) thumped Moscow (1-3) 73-42. Abi Quinnett had 14 points to lead the Bears.

• North Star tournament: Tah-Wy-Ah Davis scored 15 points and Shannon Miller added nine to lead 2-1 Lakeside (Plummer) to a 42-31 victory over host Clark Fork (1-1) in the tournament title game. After scoring just one point in the opening quarter, the Knights went on a 16-4 run in the second to take a five-point lead into halftime.

Nonleague: Brittany Tackett had 13 points and Sydney Williams added 12 as the Coeur d’Alene JV squad edged Bonners Ferry (0-2) 46-41 in Coeur d’Alene. Markayle Acord scored a game-high 14 points for the Badgers. … Lakeland (2-1) beat Kellogg (2-2) 57-13 in other nonleague action.
