In brief: Vanderbilt upsets No. 8 North Carolina

College Basketball: Jenkins scored 16 points, and Festus Ezeli and Jeffery Taylor each had 15 to lead Vanderbilt to a 72-65 win over reeling No. 8 North Carolina on Sunday night in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament in San Juan.

The Commodores (3-1) beat a top-10 team for the first time since knocking off No. 1 Tennessee on Feb. 26, 2008.

The few hundred Vanderbilt fans who made the trip to Puerto Rico serenaded the Tar Heels (2-2) with chants of “Overrated!” For this year’s Tar Heels, they might be right.

Coach Roy Williams insisted after losing to Minnesota on Friday that he didn’t think anymore about last year’s 17-loss debacle. He’ll be forced to answer more questions now about what’s wrong with the slumping Tar Heels.

Tyler Zeller had 20 points and 10 rebounds for North Carolina. Harrison Barnes rebounded from a bad performance to score 11.

• Broussard, McLaughlin help Seattle edge Navy 75-70: Aaron Broussard had 26 points and nine rebounds and Mark McLaughlin added 13 points and 13 rebounds as Seattle edged Navy 75-70 in a subregional game of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in Irvine, Calif.

Cervante Burrell added 19 points for the Redhawks (2-5), who won despite 26 turnovers.

Seattle outrebounded Navy 46-29 and shot 48 percent to the Midshipmen’s 37.5 percent.

• No. 1 Connecticut adds to streak: Maya Moore scored 30 points in her homecoming to Atlanta, leading No. 1 Connecticut to its 81st consecutive victory with a 71-51 rout of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The Huskies (3-0) tied Washington University, an NCAA Division III school, for the most consecutive wins by a woman’s program at any level.

UConn should break the mark against Howard on Friday, then set off toward the next milestone: UCLA’s 88-game winning streak during the 1970s, the longest by a men’s program.

• Dunlap, Pinkett lead No.9 Kentucky to victory: Victoria Dunlap scored 24 points and redshirt freshman guard Bernisha Pinkett had a career-high 17 points as Kentucky beat Notre Dame in Lexington, Ky.

Keyla Snowden added 17 points for the Wildcats (3-0), who have won 20 straight games at Memorial Coliseum.

Hamilton leads Pistons to OT win

NBA: Richard Hamilton scored 12 of his 27 points in overtime in the Detroit Pistons’ 115-110 victory over the Washington Wizards in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Wizards rookie John Wall missed his fourth straight game because of a sprained left foot.

Rodney Stuckey scored 15 points and dished out seven assists. Austin Daye did not enter the game due to coaches’ decision.

Charlie Villanueva added 25 points for Detroit. JaVale McGee had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Wizards. Gilbert Arenas added 19 points and a career-high 16 assists.

• Johnson lifts Raptors over Celtics: Amir Johnson made two free throws with less than 3 seconds to play, Andrea Bargnani scored 29 points, and the Toronto Raptors beat visiting Boston 102-101.

Paul Pierce’s potential game-winner bounced off the rim as Toronto beat Boston for the first time since a 114-112 road win on Jan. 23, 2008.

Red Wings rally to beat Flames in OT

NHL: Henrik Zetterberg tied it on a power play with 3.2 seconds left in regulation and goalie Jimmy Howard off for an extra attacker, and Nicklas Lidstrom scored at 1:38 of overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 5-4 victory over the visiting Calgary Flames.

Zetterberg had two goals, Lidstrom added two assists and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists.

Byfuglien, Thrashers top Islanders in OT: Dustin Byfuglien scored at 1:30 of overtime to give the host Atlanta Thrashers a 2-1 victory over New York, extending the Islanders’ losing streak to 13 games.

Rick DiPietro, who had allowed 17 goals while losing his last three starts, had 33 saves and held the Thrashers to one goal in regulation.

Federer, Murray win in straight sets

Tennis: Roger Federer and Andy Murray won in straight sets on the opening day of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Federer beat David Ferrer 6-1, 6-4 on the indoor hard court at the O2 Arena. Murray beat Robin Soderling 6-2, 6-4.

Murray and Federer are in Group B at the round-robin tournament. Group A plays today, with top-ranked Rafael Nadal facing Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic playing Tomas Berdych.

Mallinger wins Pebble Beach Invitational

Golf: John Mallinger won the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Invitational, birdieing four of the last six holes for a 4-under 68 and a two-stroke victory over Jason Gore.

Mallinger, who lost his fully exempt PGA Tour status after finishing 133rd on the money list, made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to finish at 15-under 273 in the event.

• Poulter holds on to win Hong Kong Open: Ian Poulter held off a spirited challenge from Italian youngster Matteo Manassero to win the Hong Kong Open by one stroke.

Manassero, 17, shot an 8-under 62 at the Fanling course and finished at 21-under 259, but Poulter’s 67 was enough to secure his 10th win on the European Tour.

CFL’s Grey Cup to feature rematch

Miscellany: Chris Getzlaf had eight catches for 109 yards and a touchdown to help the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders with a 29-16 victory over the Calgary Stampeders in the frigid West Final.

Avon Cobourne ran for 163 yards and a touchdown to help the Montreal Alouettes reach the Grey Cup for the third year in a row with a 48-17 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in the East Final in Montreal.

Saskatchewan and Montreal met in last year’s Grey Cup, where Montreal won 28-27.

• Davis wins speedskating event: Two-time Olympic champion Shani Davis of the United States won his second straight 1,000-meter World Cup race.

Davis clocked 1 minute, 8.82 seconds in Berlin to win comfortably ahead of South Korea’s Lee Kyou-hyuk, who finished in 1:09.08. 3. Simon Kuipers of the Netherlands was third in 1:09.11.

• Rudisha, Vlasic, win Athlete of the Year awards: Kenyan 800-meter runner David Rudisha and Croatian high jumper Blanka Vlasic have won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year awards.

Rudisha clocked 1 minute, 41.01 seconds in the two-lap race on Aug. 29 at the Rieti meeting, shaving 0.08 seconds off the mark he set in Berlin the week before.

Vlasic won the world indoor championships and was crowned European champion this year.
