Lucas’ 29 points lead Michigan State past Washington
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Maybe the Washington Huskies will make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, but the past 24 hours proved they still have a long ways to go before competing with the best college basketball teams in the country.
After they were torched by Kentucky guard Brandon Knight in the Maui Invitational semifinals Tuesday, they couldn’t contain Michigan State guard Kalin Lucas in a 76-71 defeat in a consolation game Wednesday.
Lucas scored a game-high 29 points but left the game with a knee injury with 2:42 remaining.
The No. 2 Spartans turned to senior guard Durrell Summers, who made two 3-pointers and gave Michigan State a 72-68 lead with 1:13 left over No. 13 UW.
UW’s Isaiah Thomas converted a contested layup with less than a minute remaining and Bryan-Amaning went to the free-throw line and could have tied the score with 13.5 seconds on the clock. He sank the first attempt, but missed the second.
