Area roundup: Whitworth wins opener in Hawaii

Michael Taylor scored 26 points and Whitworth outscored Carthage 19-9 over the final six minutes to defeat the Redmen 81-69 in the first game of the Surf’s Up Classic late Wednesday night in Honolulu.

The Pirates, ranked 16th in the the preseason poll, improved to 3-0. Carthage, ranked fifth in the same poll, fell to 2-2.

David Riley added 18 points for Whitworth which will play Luther College on Saturday.


Gonzaga senior libero Allyson Powell has been named honorable mention All-West Coast Conference.

San Diego’s Ali Troost was named player of the year and USD’s Jennifer Petrie coach of the year.
