Road-tested Huskies seek another upset

Scott M. Johnson Everett Herald

Winning, especially the ways the University of Washington women’s soccer team has lately, can be taxing.

UW (13-8-2) is one win away from the first trip to the NCAA semifinals in program history. They are currently on their fifth consecutive weekend road trip, and in the past two Saturdays they’ve played almost 214 minutes of soccer, four overtimes and a 22-shot, penalty-kick shootout.

The journey continues today at Boston College (16-6-1) in the national quarterfinals.

To say that the Huskies are an underdog would be an understatement. UW is one of two unranked teams remaining in the field and their national RPI is 47.

If the Huskies pull off one more monumental upset this afternoon, they’ll move on to the Final Four but would face the biggest challenge of all in top-ranked Stanford.

The Cardinal, who beat Florida State to advance to the national semifinals, beat UW 2-1 in October after out-shooting the Huskies 35-2. UW went 83 minutes without a single shot and eventually got on the board when Kelli Stewart scored in the 90th minute.
