In brief: Hurricanes fire coach after loss

College football: Miami fired coach Randy Shannon on Saturday night, hours after the Hurricanes finished a 7-5 regular season that began with championship expectations.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt made the call.

Shannon received a four-year extension just before the start of the 2010 season. He was 28-22 in four seasons at Miami.

Hocutt made the decision shortly after Miami lost to South Florida 23-20 in overtime on Saturday afternoon, in a game where only about 27,000 people filled the 73,000 seats at Sun Life Stadium.

Colfax’s game now Monday

Prep sports: The State 2B football semifinal between Colfax and Waitsburg- Prescott at Washington State’s Martin Stadium was postponed because of poor road conditions and will be played Monday at 5 p.m. in Pullman.

As a result, the State 2B and 1B championship games next weekend at Tacoma have swapped time slots. The 1B final will be played on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with the 2B final on Saturday at the same time.

Cal assistant suspended

College football: California defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi was suspended for Saturday’s loss to Washington after admitting he instructed a player to fake an injury in a 15-13 defeat at Oregon on Nov. 13.

Athletic director Sandy Barbour made the announcement after the Golden Bears’ 16-13 loss to the Huskies. Barbour said coach Jeff Tedford plans to keep Lupoi on his staff. Several times this season teams have been accused of faking injuries to slow down the high-powered Ducks.
