3 injured in head-on highway crash

Three people were injured today when a motorist failed to yield to oncoming traffic on Highway 290, according to the Washington State Patrol. Patricia Thompson, 70, was eastbound at Starr Road when she attempted to turn north at 2:20 p.m. and was struck head-on by a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Oscar Sutherland, 47, of Spokane, WSP said. Sutherland and his passenger, Ronnie G. Thompson, 52, were hospitalized. Thompson of Newman Lake was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. She will be cited for failing to yield, WSP said. A Sacred Heart employee declined to release the condition of the victims.
