Education notebook: Young artists get sculpture lesson
Art students at Canfield Middle School had a special visitor on Sept. 24 when local artist Rhea Giffin stopped by the school.
During the summer, the Arts and Culture Alliance of Coeur d’Alene awarded Canfield a stipend to obtain a piece of artwork from “Art on the Green,” and the school chose a sculpture by Giffin titled “Mel’s Friends.” The 3 ½-foot-tall sculpture is on permanent display in Canfield’s library.
Canfield art teacher Marci Wing is teaching the 3-D art class that Giffin visited. Wing’s students are working on a project to create cubic-foot gargoyle sculptures, and Giffin’s techniques will be used for their project. Her visit gave the students the opportunity to ask questions, see a demonstration and learn about her work.
The art students’ finished project, “Gothic Gargoyles,” will decorate different parts of the school.
Students at Winton Elementary School in the Coeur d’Alene School District were recently awarded the Summer Reading Traveling Trophy by the Coeur d’Alene Public Library.
According to a press release from the library, Winton students were the first to receive the trophy. Susan Thorpe, the library’s youth supervisor, said that when children visited the library during the summer and participated in the summer reading program, students had the opportunity to vote for their school. Library ballots showed 59 Winton students visited the library 187 times. Because of their reading effort, students may display the trophy in their school library until next summer.
Winton librarian Beth Dane said, “Winton is a school of readers.” She added that in the past year students checked out 13,000 books, and students in third, fourth and fifth grades passed 2,989 accelerated reading tests, for a total of 18,151,970 words.
Charter students to stage ‘Musketeer’
The Panther Players at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy will entertain audiences looking for action, comedy, mystery and maybe a little romance with their performance of “The Masked Musketeer,” beginning Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
The players will perform this humorous tale in the school multipurpose room, continuing Oct. 14 through 16 at 7 p.m. An afternoon performance will be held Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and children. Tickets are available at the door one hour prior to the show.

Holy Family school plans carnival
Holy Family Catholic School, 3005 W. Kathleen Ave., in Coeur d’Alene, will have its first “Hawktoberfest” family carnival on Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
The family fun night will include a cakewalk, fishing games, and a bean bag toss. Carnivalgoers can experience “Minute to Win It”-style games in the middle school classrooms. The festivities also include a “tattoo” parlor and an art gallery.
Hawktoberfest is a community event. Entry to the carnival is by donation of nonperishable food for the local food bank. Tickets to play games will be five for $1.
