Area roundup: Zags beat Eagles in OT soccer

Cassie Geerdts scored in overtime to give Gonzaga a 2-1 women’s soccer victory Sunday over Eastern Washington in Spokane.

Brittany Sparks scored her 15th career goal for the Eagles (0-9-1), making her Eastern’s all-time leading scorer. She scored in the second minute for a 1-0 lead.

Emily Hutchins tied it in the 29th minute for the Bulldogs (5-7-1).

• Sidona Davin tied the match with nine minutes left and Abbie Moseley won it in the fourth minute of overtime as Whitworth (8-3, 6-1) rallied for a 2-1 win over Willamette in Northwest Conference play in Salem, Ore.

• Demi Wignot’s goal in the 28th minute gave North Idaho (7-5-1) the lead, but Laramie County Community College netted three second-half goals for a 3-1 win at Cheyenne, Wyo.

Men’s soccer

Andrew French scored in the second minute for the only goal of the game as Whitworth (7-2-1, 4-1-1) beat Willamette 1-0 in a Northwest Conference match in Salem, Ore.

• Brent Richards scored two goals but it wasn’t enough as No. 23 Washington (6-3-1, 0-2-0) fell to No. 22 San Diego State 4-3 in overtime in Pac-10 play in San Diego.

• North Idaho (6-7) beat Laramie County CC 2-1 in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Junior hockey

Nick Redding scored an unassisted goal with 12 minutes to play to break a 2-all tie and the Spokane Braves added two insurance goals in the third period for a 5-2 win over the Penticton Lakers in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in Penticton, British Columbia. Rance Hughes, Joel Stewart, Mitch Fowler and Ryan Hadley-Schaal scored the other goals for the Braves (5-6).
