Area roundup: Hurt paces Cougars at rain-soaked tourney

Kyle Hurt finished the tournament in fifth place with a 3-under-par 141 to help the Washington State Cougars men’s golf team tie for fourth place Tuesday at the Wolf Pack Classic in Stateline, Nev.

Idaho’s Damian Telles also tied for fifth place as the Vandals scratched out a score of 587 to finish seventh. The tournament was cut short by two rounds because of multiple rain delays.

Awards

A pair of Idaho cross country athletes, Barry Britt from the men’s team and Julia Veseth from the women’s team, swept the Western Athletic Conference athlete of the week awards for their efforts at the Charles Bowles Invitational.

• Washington State freshman Eileen Maes was named Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer player of the week after scoring three times against Gonzaga last Friday.

• Three Whitworth women’s athletes were honored by the Northwest Conference. Kaimi Rocha (volleyball), Callie Bergstrom (soccer) and Tonya Turner (cross country) were each named athlete of the week.

Football

The Arena Football League Spokane Shock signed Mac linebacker Micah King, who had 5.5 sacks for Iowa last year.

That doesn’t necessarily signal an end to Aaron Robbins’ time in Spokane. Robbins, the Shock’s Mac LB last season, is looking at other options, with an eye on outdoor football. Spokane would like Robbins to return next season.

Both players were with the 2009 Arkansas Twisters as Robbins won the starting job and King was eventually released. The two might battle for a job again.

On a separate topic, Jack linebacker Antwan Marsh has bulked up to around 230 pounds, up from his 2010 playing weight of 215.
