Bike lanes’ benefit wide
I am befuddled by recent letters to the editor regarding the funding of bike lanes and confused by writers who don’t seem to realize that their friends, neighbors and co-workers ride bikes.
I began bike commuting a few years ago and now frequently cycle to Spokane Community College where I am an instructor. I also bike to yoga classes, coffee dates, grocery stores, downtown events, volunteer opportunities and visits with my 94-year-old dad.
I am a professional and pay my fair share in taxes. My children are grown, but I am happy to support public schools. They have finished college, but I am glad my taxes help others earn an education. I have never had a house fire nor needed a paramedic, but readily pay taxes for emergency services. That’s what it means to live in a community.
I hope you will likewise support funds that allow for cycling. When I ride my bike, I leave parking places open, save wear on the streets and smile at pedestrians. I follow traffic rules and model healthy behavior for my children, students and friends. Let’s share the roads, share the resources, and allow Spokane to be a positive, vibrant city.
