Area roundup: Utah State defeats Idaho in volleyball

Liz McArthur had 20 kills and hit .342 Wednesday night as Utah State (14-3, 2-2) handed Idaho a 3-1 defeat at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho, as the Vandals lost a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match at home for the first time this season.

Allison Walker and Alicia Milo combined for 35 kills for the Vandals (8-9, 3-3), who had a four-game home winning streak end.

Jenny Feicht had her fourth double-double of the season for Idaho, with 49 assists and 10 digs.

• Karis Gamache had a match-high 12 kills to guide Community Colleges of Spokane (20-4, 6-1) to a sweep of host Big Bend (9-15, 1-7) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play at Moses Lake.

Kelsey Kurtz added 26 assists and three aces for the Sasquatch, who are in second place in the East Division, behind Blue Mountain.

Men’s soccer

Andrew Mastronardi headed in Sam Palmer’s free kick in the 89th minute to give CCS (8-3-1, 5-1-1) a 2-1 win over Wenatchee Valley (3-6-1, 1-5-1) in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls CC.

Women’s soccer

Nikayla Caudill had one goal and two assists in the second half to help CCS (8-0-1, 5-0-1 NWAACC) polish off a 6-0 win over Wenatchee Valley (2-6, 1-5) at SFCC.

Michelle Cole recorded the Sasquatch’s sixth shutout of the season. CCS has outscored rivals 25-5.

Women’s golf

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro finished three rounds at even-par 216 to tie for sixth place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Tacoma Country and Golf Club at Lakewood, Wash.

Fellow junior Teo Poplawski tied for 20th at 7-over 223 as the Vandals (932) placed 12th among 15 teams.

Washington State (931) placed 11th, led by Ali Thompson, who tied for 39th at 229. Gonzaga (935) placed 13th with freshman Tai Jade Kliebphipat tying for 36th at 228.

• University of Montana junior Lauren Howell (Mead High) was named Big Sky Conference golfer of the week after tying for sixth place at the South Florida Waterlefe Invitational, which ended Wednesday.

Howell finished three rounds at 6-over-par 222, including Tuesday’s 1-under 71.

Men’s tennis

Gonzaga juniors Zhia Hwa Chong and Scott Sullivan were named co-West Coast Conference doubles players of the month for September.

Chong and Sullivan defeated top-seeded Carl Kuschke and David Cysneiros 8-2 in the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Classic title match on Sept. 26.
