Area roundup: Dons break through at GU in WCC volleyball

Malina Terrell hit .600 and combined with Alycia Cox for 23 kills Thursday as visiting San Francisco swept Gonzaga 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 in West Coast Conference volleyball.

Terrell tied her career high with 13 kills and Joan Caloiaro added 23 assists and 12 digs for the Dons (3-12, 1-2), who won in Spokane for the first time in three years.

Junior defensive specialist Laura Day had 12 kills and 14 digs for the Bulldogs (2-17, 0-3).

The Spokane Shock added defensive lineman Mike Alston to their 2011 roster.

Alston, the 25th player added to the roster, played last season for the Chicago Rush. He played at the University of Toledo before his professional career.

Tony Wroten Jr., a senior at Seattle’s Garfield High School and one of the most talked-about recruits the area has seen, announced that he plans to sign with the Washington Huskies.

The non-binding oral commitment is likely to be made official during next month’s signing day, and the UW faithful might understandably temper enthusiasm until the ink is dry.

Wroten, a 6-foot-5 point guard who is still developing a consistent outside shot, has been on the national radar since his freshman year at Garfield.

Rivals.com ranks Wroten as the top recruit in Washington and the 30th-best in the nation.
