NFL notes: McCoy could get first start

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini says quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace are both “hurting” and it’s possible rookie Colt McCoy could make his first NFL start against Pittsburgh.

Delhomme, who missed Cleveland’s previous three games with a high ankle sprain, had to play Sunday after Wallace injured his ankle when he was sacked by John Abraham in the first half of the Browns’ 20-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Mangini would not give any specifics on the injuries to either Delhomme or Wallace.

McCoy has not played this season, but Mangini indicated he is an option for Sunday’s game against the Steelers. Mangini also said general manager Tom Heckert would look at his list of quarterbacks to sign.

Mangini said there were “a lot of moving parts” with Cleveland’s quarterback situation.

Favre under the scope

The NFL is still looking to “find out all the facts” regarding allegations that Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre sent racy messages and lewd photos to a Jets game hostess in 2008.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says that “once we determine those facts, then we’ll determine what the next step is from there, if any.”

Goodell spoke in Chicago, where he is attending league meetings.

There was no indication when the investigation would be complete or when the league would talk to Favre.

The league is looking into the matter under its personal conduct policy. Should Favre be found to have violated the policy, he could be fined or suspended.

WR Clayton lost for year

St. Louis Rams receiver Mark Clayton won’t return this season after suffering a knee injury.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo said Clayton was hurt early in Sunday’s 44-6 loss at Detroit. He says Clayton has a torn patellar tendon in his right knee.

Clayton was acquired in a trade with Baltimore on Sept. 6.

The 28-year-old Clayton is the third St. Louis wide receiver to suffer a season-ending injury in 2010. Donnie Avery and Dominique Curry both tore ACLs in their knees.

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith remains hopeful QB Jay Cutler will return from his concussion this week against the Seattle Seahawks. … Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has a concussion and will miss some practice time for the Green Bay Packers this week. His availability for Sunday’s game against Miami is unclear. … Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels already has ruled out safeties Brian Dawkins and Darcel McBath and cornerback Andre’ Goodman along with pass-rusher Robert Ayers and special teams captain Wesley Woodyard for Sunday’s game against the N.Y Jets.
