Local roundup: Whitworth women 2nd by stroke

Whitworth had three in the top seven, but Linfield had the medalist and pulled out a one-stroke victory over the host Pirates in the Whitworth Women’s Fall Invitational golf tournament that wound up a two-day run Monday at Spokane Country Club.

Sophomore Emily Guthrie finished second to lead the Pirates with an 11-over-par 157, Ashley Danforth was fifth at 168 and Community Colleges of Spokane transfer Darcy Moberg from Freeman tied for sixth at 171.

Brynn Hurdus of Linfield claimed medalist honors with an 8-over 154 as the Wildcats edged Whitworth 677-678.

North Idaho College finished fourth in the six-school field with a 733. Cardinals freshman Rachel Westby from Post Falls was ninth at 177.

Boys soccer

Idaho 4A Region I: A.J. Gayler scored from just outside the 18-yard box in the center of the field at 73 minutes to pull Moscow to a 2-1 playoff win over visiting Lakeland.

Second-seeded Moscow visits No. 1 Sandpoint on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Lakeland was eliminated.

Women’s soccer

WAC: Chelsea Small of Idaho, who had three goals, including the winners, and two assists in two Vandals wins, is the offensive player of the week.

The sophomore has a WAC-leading seven game-winners among her 12 goals this season and 16 assists. She has 20 career goals.
