Longtime S-R employee dies

Frederick L. Engard, the former circulation director of The Spokesman-Review and the Spokane Daily Chronicle, has died at the age of 92.

Engard worked for the newspaper company for more than 47 years, rising from a 12-year-old paperboy to be named circulation director in 1966. In 1978 he was appointed manager of Northwest Farm Magazines, and he retired from Cowles Publishing Co. in 1983.

Engard died on Oct. 4 in Spokane. He’s survived by his wife, Fay – with whom he celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Sept. 2 – one daughter, two granddaughters and a great-grandson. There will be no memorial service at Engard’s request.
