GU women score soccer win

After 90 minutes of scoreless play by the Gonzaga and Pepperdine women’s soccer teams, it only took 2 minutes in overtime for Sarah Rhodes’ header to find the net and give the Bulldogs the 1-0 sudden-death victory over their WCC foe Friday in Spokane.

The Waves (7-4-4, 0-1-1) outshot GU (6-8-1, 1-1) 9-6 in the match, but the Bulldogs’ Lauren Ames recorded four saves to hold the Waves scoreless.

• Christen Press scored a goal and added an assist as No. 1 Stanford (11-0-2, 2-0) used goals from five players to roll to a 5-0 victory over Washington State (6-7, 1-1) in Pac-10 play in Stanford, Calif.

• Lauren Battung scored in the final minute of regulation to lift California (6-4-3, 1-2) to a 3-2 win against Washington (9-4-1, 2-1), handing the Huskies their first Pac-10 loss in Berkeley, Calif.

• Whitney Brannan and Brittany Sparks each scored a goal and added an assist as Eastern Washington (1-11-1, 1-2) snapped an 11-match losing streak with a 2-0 shutout of Big Sky opponent Idaho State (5-8-2, 0-1-2) in Cheney.

• Melissa Canite scored on an assist from Lauren Layton in the 89th minute to lift Idaho (13-3, 4-0) to a 1-0 win over Nevada (6-7-2, 1-3) in WAC play in Reno, Nevada.

• Demi Wignot scored a hat trick in the first half and North Idaho (10-3-1) cruised to a 4-0 victory over Western Wyoming CC in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Men’s soccer

Colin Flynn tallied a goal and an assist to lead Gonzaga (4-8, 1-4) to its first WCC win, 3-1 over San Francisco (2-8-2, 0-4-1) in Spokane. Flynn’s goal in the 38th minute snapped a 1-1.

• Brent Richards scored two goals to start the second half and Washington (8-4-1, 2-3) defeated Oregon State (6-6, 1-4) 4-0 in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

• North Idaho (7-7-1) blanked Western Wyoming CC (3-13-1) 2-0 in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Volleyball

Tarah Murrey had 20 kills and four blocks and Kat Brown added 11 kills as California (16-1, 6-1) beat Washington State (6-10, 0-6) 3-1 in Berkeley, Calif.

• Alix Klineman finished with 32 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as No. 2 Stanford (15-1, 6-1) edged No. 7 Washington (15-2, 4-2) 24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 32-30 in Pac-10 play in Stanford, Calif.

• Jacque Brown’s 11 kills and 17 digs paced host Eastern Washington (4-13, 3-4) to a 3-0 win against Big Sky foe Northern Arizona (7-10, 3-4).

• Kaimi Rocha and Brynn DeLong each had 11 kills and four players finished with double-digit kills for Whitworth (11-5, 8-1), which swept Pacific Lutheran (13-5, 7-2) in Spokane to take sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (22-7) went 1-2 on the first day of the Clark Crossover, beating Bellevue and falling to Tacoma CC and Mt. Hood CC in Vancouver, Wash. Karis Gamache had nine blocks on the day and eight kills in two of the matches.

Men’s golf

Kris Brett finished with a 13-over-par 229 over three days, leading North Idaho to a 13th-place finish at the NJCAA D1 National Championship preview in Odessa, Texas.

New Mexico CC’s Jordan McColl earned medalist honors at 206.

Hockey

Mitch Fowler scored at the 13:46 mark in the second period on an assist from Guissepe Dippolito and the Spokane Braves (8-6) shut out Creston Valley (7-6) 1-0 in Creston, B.C.
