Structure fire deadly to three pit bull dogs

The Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to 220 calls between Oct. 7 and Oct. 13.

Bill Clifford, assistant fire marshal, said that of those calls, six were for structure fires.

On Oct. 9, the department responded to a call at 17304 E. Fourth Ave. Three pit bulls died in the fire, which also caused an estimated $60,000 worth of damage. The owners didn’t have insurance.

Another call on Oct. 9 was at a set of abandoned buildings at 17018 E. Sprague Ave. Clifford said the fire is suspicious and anyone with information should call the fire department at (509) 928-1700.

Along with the structure fires, the department responded to one vehicle fire and four brush fires. Three of those brush fires were legal recreational fires and one was someone burning yard debris. Clifford said the department educated that person on fire safety and the law, but no tickets were written.

The department also responded to 14 building alarms, 173 emergency medical calls and one hazardous material call.

There were 18 motor vehicle collisions. Seven people were transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

Finally, the department conducted three service calls – two were to assist a resident with a motorized scooter and one later turned out to be a medical call after someone had fallen down.
