Two men trapped when vehicle falls on North Side

Assistant Spokane fire chief says they were lucky a passer-by was there to help

Two men were injured in northeast Spokane this morning when a vehicle they were working on dropped onto them, fire officials said. Spokane firefighters responded to a call at 10:50 a.m. at East Princeton Avenue and North Mayfair Street. The two men were transported to Spokane hospitals, one of them with apparent serious injuries, officials said. The men were attempting to change a tire on a mini-van when the jack holding up the vehicle gave way, dropping the van onto both men who were initially trapped, said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer. A passerby spotted the men and worked quickly to free them about the same time that a nearby fire paramedic team arrived, Schaeffer said. “They were incredibly fortunate,” he said, to have a helpful passer-by in the area and to have a quick response from paramedic firefighters. One man was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center with what appeared to be serious injures. The other man went to Providence Holy Family Hospital with what Schaeffer described as non-life-threatening injuries.
