Police rescue woman reporting assault on ride to Spokane

By The Spokesman-Review

A woman who reported that she was assaulted and threatened by an ex-boyfriend in a cross-county ride was rescued by law enforcement officers in Colfax on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was taken to Whitman Community Hospital for injuries and then released, according to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office.

The ex-boyfriend, Joseph S. Nesbitt, 24, of Clarkston, was arrested for felony harassment, unlawful imprisonment and fourth-degree assault, and for an outstanding warrant in Asotin County.

A friend of the victim called law officers initially and told them that the woman was in trouble on the ride from Clarkston to the Spokane area.

The pair was spotted in the woman’s vehicle at a Rosauer’s supermarket in Colfax, where officers from Colfax police, Washington State Patrol and the county sheriff’s office made the arrest.

Officers subsequently learned that the victim initially agreed to provide the ride, but that Nesbitt allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not take him to Spokane. In the course of the trip, Nesbitt is alleged to have assaulted the woman, the sheriff’s office said.
