Area roundup: Mt. Spokane clinches volleyball title

Kenzie Reid doled out 37 assists and Annie Arnzen added 11 kills as Mt. Spokane (8-0) clinched at least a share of the Greater Spokane League volleyball title Tuesday, sweeping Central Valley (5-3) at CV.

Delaney Fisher led the Bears with 14 digs, but they could not stop the Wildcats’ attack, bolstered by 10 kills from Kennadie Clute.

In other GSL matches, Janie Coehlo tallied a match-high 23 digs and Sam Batt added 25 assists as visiting Ferris (5-3) dumped Gonzaga Prep (4-4) in straight sets. Lindsay Stockton had a match-high 12 kills to lead the Bullpups. … Brigid Rypien had seven kills and eight digs and Tiana Lee added 20 assists and six aces as North Central (1-7) swept host Rogers (0-8).

• Great Northern: Shaniqua Nilles compiled 15 kills and Aaliyah Ashley-Meek added 29 assists and five aces as West Valley (10-0) registered a 3-1 win over visiting East Valley (6-4). … Camille Davis had 19 assists and two aces and Shelby Cheslek added 10 kills as Pullman (10-1) stayed close to first-place West Valley by sweeping Clarkston (5-5) in Pullman. … Liz Gill had seven kills and seven digs and Sayde Davis added 19 assists as visiting Cheney (4-7) swept Medical Lake (1-10).

• IEL: Kelly Jo Cutler recorded a match-high 10 kills and MacKenzie Brown added six digs and four aces as 5A Lake City swept 4A Lakeland in Rathdrum.

Girls soccer

• Great Northern: Amanda Bliesner finished with three goals, including a penalty-kick score at the 60-minute mark to snap a 2-2 tie, as East Valley (10-4, 9-1) edged host West Valley (6-6-1, 6-4) 3-2. … Annalisa Drussel scored a goal and added two assists and Pullman (10-4-1, 8-3) blanked visiting Clarkston (1-12-1, 1-8-1) 5-0 to remain deadlocked in a tie for second place with Cheney. … Chae Brown and Monica Hoblin each scored goals and visiting Cheney (8-7, 8-3) held Medical Lake (2-12, 1-10) without a shot, beating the Cardinals 2-0.

Slowpitch softball

• GSL: Brieann Warren finished with two hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, to clinch a 14-4 University (17-0) victory over visiting North Central (12-6) in six innings. The win in the league-tournament semifinals sets the Titans up to host Central Valley at 4 p.m. Thursday for the championship. … In the other semifinal, Bailey Bergdahl had three hits and two RBIs and Lindsey Gibson added three hits with three RBIs as Central Valley (14-3) scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings to beat visiting Rogers (12-6) 14-4.

Women’s volleyball

Tina Strahinic and Kaylee Ponce each finished with 13 kills and Janele Vogt added seven blocks and two aces as North Idaho (20-5) earned its eighth straight victory, beating Community Colleges of Spokane (25-8) 3-1 in nonconference action at Spokane Falls CC.

Women’s golf

Eastern Washington’s Kellie Holmstedt tallied a 3-over-par 147 over her two rounds, giving her a fourth-place finish, to lead the Eagles to third place at the Shocker Invitational in Newton, Kan.

EWU tallied a round total of 303, its best round since the Big Sky Championship in 2008.

College basketball

The Idaho women were picked fourth by the coaches and fifth by the media in the Western Athletic Conference preseason polls. The Idaho men were picked eighth in both polls.

The UI women have two preseason all-conference picks – Rachel Kloke, last year’s leading scorer at 14.5 points, on the first team, and Yinka Olorunnife, last year’s top rebounder at 7.9, on the second team.

The men lost four starters and a majority of their points, rebounds and assists from the 2009-10 squad that went 15-16 overall and 6-10 in the WAC.
