OSU blanks Cougars

Jenna Richardson’s first-half goal lifted No. 12 Oregon State (12-1-1, 4-0) past Washington State (6-10, 1-4) 1-0 in Pac-10 women’s soccer Friday in Pullman.

Richardson’s winner came in the 35th minute when she dribbled past two WSU defenders and beat Ariana Byrd from eight yards out to give the Beavers a fourth straight win to open conference play.

• Washington (10-5-1, 3-2) received two second-half goals from Alex Webber and Kellye Joswick, shutting out Oregon (4-8-3, 0-3-1) 2-0 in Pac-10 action in Seattle.

UW keeper Jorde Lafontaine-Kussman had four saves to earn the shutout.

• Laura Wayland gave Northern Colorado (10-4-2, 3-1-1) an early lead with a goal in the second minute and UNC tacked on two more goals to beat Eastern Washington (2-12-1, 2-3) 3-0 in Big Sky play in Greeley, Colo.

The Eagles saw their postseason hopes take a hit with the loss after winning two straight conference games last weekend. They must now win their final two conference games for a chance of reaching the playoffs.

• Anessa Patton scored two goals and added an assist as Santa Clara (11-3-2, 4-0) shut out Gonzaga (7-9-1, 2-2) 5-0 in WCC action in Santa Clara, Calif.

Two Broncos goal keepers combined for the shutout against the Bulldogs.

Volleyball

Sarah Reaves had 16 kills and 13 digs to lead Arizona State (9-11, 4-4) to a 3-2 victory over Washington State (6-12, 0-8) in Pac-10 play in Pullman. Meagan Ganzer notched a match-high 19 kills for the Cougars, who played their closest match of the Pac-10 season, taking ASU to five sets.

• Becky Perry’s 19 kills and six blocks paced No. 7 Washington (16-3, 5-3) to a 3-2 victory over Pac-10 foe No. 25 Arizona (14-7, 3-5) in Seattle. Kindra Carlson added 13 kills for the Huskies.

• Bethany Wray had 16 kills and a career-high seven blocks to lead Weber State (3-19, 1-8) to its first Big Sky Conference win with a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over Eastern Washington (4-15, 3-6) in Ogden, Utah.

• Brigitte Lowe had 14 kills and 15 digs and Community Colleges of Spokane (26-8, 8-1) swept Yakima Valley (14-10, 4-6) in NWAACC play in Spokane.

Hockey

Taylor Anderson scored two goals to lead Castlegar (10-3) to a 5-3 victory over the Spokane Braves (9-7) in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in Castlegar, British Columbia.
