Father, son guilty in tribal artifacts dig

Associated Press

A father and son from Orofino, Idaho, have each been sentenced to one year of probation for digging up tribal artifacts on federal land along the Salmon River last year.

Eddie Leroy Anderson, 67, and Eddie Joseph Anderson Jr., 33, were sentenced earlier this week in federal court.

The Lewiston Tribune reported that U.S. Magistrate Candy W. Dale also ordered the two to write letters of apology and pay $1,500 in restitution.

Each pleaded guilty in August to misdemeanor charges of violating the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979.

Authorities say the two dug holes looking for artifacts near the mouth of Graves Creek in April 2009.

Officials say the area contains artifacts dating back more than 13,000 years.
