Football game, fun planned at Winton

Winton students and dads, are you ready for some football?

Football fans at Winton Elementary School in the Coeur d’Alene School District can watch “Monday Night Football” with their dads and other fans at the Dad and Me Fall Kick-Off party on Monday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The fun will include the game on two 10-foot screens, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Everybody can enjoy dinner at 6. Root beer floats will be served at 6:45. The football continues at 7:15 and the screen comes down at 8:30.

Students and staff at Spirit Lake Elementary will say “no!” to drugs and “yes!” to making the right decisions with the Red Ribbon celebration on Friday.

According to the school newsletter, at 1:30 p.m., Spirit Lake students will walk to the city park and meet with Timberlake High School student leaders, city dignitaries and local law enforcement and then parade down Maine Street and back to their school, to raise awareness about drug use and saying “no!” to drugs.

The celebration is part of “Red Ribbon Week,” a nationwide community campaign, held annually in October.

CdA High to perform ‘Babes in Arms’

Drama students at Coeur d’Alene High School will begin their fall musical, “Babes in Arms” on Thursday in the auditorium at 7 p.m. The production will continue Friday and Saturday and Nov. 4 through 6 at 7 p.m.

The show is the 1950s George Oppenheimer revision that features musical favorites, including “My Funny Valentine,” “The Lady is a Tramp” and “Johnny One Note.”

The cast includes senior Chris Myers as Valentine White; junior Abby Anderson as Susie Ward; senior Bryan Rankin as Seymour Fleming; senior Bunny Byron as Mackenzie Murray; sophomore Dan Savage as Lee Calhoun; senior Taylor Stewart as Phyllis Owen; and junior Dana Savage as Jennifer Owen. Other cast members include director Jared Helm; musical director Rebecca Monitz; choreographer Signe Haverfield; and Rita Huber on piano.

Tickets are $8 for adults and seniors, students and children are $6. CHS ASB card holders are $5.

Schuppel October artist at Sorensen school

Local artist Diana Schuppel of Sandpoint will visit Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities as its October Artist in Residence.

Schuppel will teach Sorensen students about mural art. All students will then collaborate on a mural that will be displayed in their library. Schuppel’s lessons will also be a part of each classroom’s daily curricular connections during their Arts and Humanity block.

According to information on Sorensen’s website, magnet funds provide the money for the important “unique, educational and engaging” opportunity for the students.

Gonzaga Prep students earn AP Scholar status

Gonzaga Prep students from Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls recently earned AP Scholar status for academic excellence on their college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Program exams.

Lauren Fritz, of Coeur d’Alene, earned the National AP Scholar status. This status is awarded to students who receive an average grade of at least 4.0 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4.0 or higher on eight or more of the exams.

AP Scholars with Distinction, given to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3.0 or higher on five or more of the exams, include Tessa Brinkman, of Post Falls, and Lauren Fritz, of Coeur d’Alene.

McLain Leonard, of Post Falls, received the AP Scholar status. This award is given to students who receive grades of 3.0 or higher on three or more AP exams.

Students took the AP exams in May after completing college-level classes at Gonzaga Prep.
