In brief: Students to face hearing over party

ELLENSBURG – Central Washington University officials say 40 students face conduct hearings due to a house party in Rosyln where a number of people became sick.

The university said more students will be notified of hearings after police provide their names. Police have interviewed 54 students and three others. Sanctions could range from an alcohol education class to suspension or expulsion.

Rosyln police estimate 50 or more students or friends were at the Oct. 8 party in the town about 30 miles west of the Ellensburg campus. Many partygoers were underage and some drank alcohol that was apparently drugged. Nine were hospitalized.

CWU officials say toxicology results are expected to be discussed Monday.

Stun guns OK’d for animal control

LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Animal control officers in Lakewood are getting stun guns to protect themselves against dangerous animals – and pet owners.

The Lakewood City Council voted this week to give the two officers authority to carry the devices, which will cost about $1,600.

The officers previously have had to call police to help with aggressive or threatening animals, but made police unavailable to respond to more pressing calls.

Officer disarms boy with butcher knives

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. – A police officer disarmed a 10-year-old boy with two butcher knives by threatening him with a stun gun, authorities said.

Police Chief Mark Chase said the boy ran from a home with the knives and pointed them toward the officer when confronted around 7:30 a.m. Friday in a Junction City alley.

Chase said the boy only dropped the knives after the officer pulled his stun gun and warned he’d use it if the child didn’t comply.

Officers found four other knives on him.
