New Intel factory welcomed for jobs

Associated Press

PORTLAND – The new planned Intel Corp. research facility in Hillsboro will provide jobs to hard-hit sectors of Oregon’s labor force at a time when they are direly needed.

The Oregonian reported construction workers, carpenters and engineers can expect to see new jobs in the Portland metro area – good news with Oregon’s 10.6 percent unemployment.

The Intel factory is expected to open in 2013.

Intel’s other research facilities employ a mix of skilled manufacturing staff and engineers.

Before then, commercial carpenters, plumbers, pipefitters and other laborers will likely be called to build the plant.

Many in the area have some experience with Intel factory construction – including construction of “clean rooms” for chip manufacturing – after helping build another Oregon Intel facility in 2003.
