Area roundup: Rawitzer shares medalist honors

Idaho sophomore Matt Rawitzer shot a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday for a three-round score of 208 to finish in a tie for first place with New Mexico State’s Timothy Madigan at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

Jarred Bosio added a final-round 64 to finish fifth in the tournament, leading the Vandals to fifth place.

Washington State (865) placed fourth, led by Nick Ellis’ even-par 213, good for seventh place.

• Kyle Huus (4-over 220) tied for 10th place and led Gonzaga (900) to seventh place at the Kauai Invitational at Puakea Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii.

• Second-place Grahm Schmaltz (150), Alex Pounds (153) and Dylan Maine (153) led Community Colleges of Spokane (613) to a 23-shot win at the Walla Walla Invitational at Wine Valley GC.


The Big Sky Conference suspended Eastern Washington University defensive back Artise Gauldin for an illegal hit, commissioner Doug Fullerton announced. Gauldin will serve a one-game suspension on Saturday when EWU plays at Portland State.

Whitworth keeper Kyle Novak was named Northwest Conference player of the week after recording his fifth and sixth shutouts of the season.

Zach Collins’ rookie year with the Portland Trail Blazers was more like two seasons in one. The former Gonzaga Bulldog barely saw the floor in the first two months of the season. He averaged 3.8 minutes per November game. Collins carved out a spot in the rotation in December and his playing time soared into the 14-18 minute range.
