Achievements: Area Boy Scouts earn Eagle rank

Daniel Berg, a member of Troop 393, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest given in the Boy Scouts.

For his project, Berg helped paint and update the Center Pointe Community Center, which provides positive social, recreational and educational activities for adults with diverse abilities.

He is a senior at Ferris High School and the son of Randy and Joanne Berg of Spokane.

Drew Castellaw, Matthew Philipps and Scot Kapstafer of Troop 325 were recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

Castellaw’s project included remodeling the Southside Christian Church plant maintenance work shop. He installed new shelves, a new work bench, painted and reorganized the shop. Castellaw graduated in 2010 from Lewis and Clark High School.

For his project, Philipps helped repair the sprinkler system for Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also organized painting the parish fellowship hall, along with the classrooms, offices, the dining room and commercial kitchen. Philipps also graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 2010.

Kapstafer’s project was refurbishing a client and employee courtyard at St. Joseph’s Family Center. New seating, a table, fountain and landscaping were added to the remodeled courtyard. Kapstafer is a 2010 graduate of Gonzaga Prep High School.

Alyssa Nilles, a 2010 graduate of Medical Lake High School, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Financial Service Centers of America. She is among 31 students across the country to receive grants to help pay for college expenses.

Military

• Three local residents graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer.

Jamie Miley is the daughter of Greg Miley of Spokane. She is a student at Washington State University. Dalton Cavazos-Cavasier is the son of Lee and Melanie Cavazos-Cavasier of Spokane and graduated from Mead High School in 2010.

Joshua Novajosky is a 2008 graduate of Ferris High School and is the son of Alan and Gena Novajosky of Spokane.

• Ten local residents graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman Wayne Phillips is a 2004 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and the son of Joe Phillips of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Jacob Cole is the son of Daniel Cole of Spokane and graduated in 2008 from Mead High School.

Air Force Airman Monica Otholt is the daughter of Carl and Paula Otholt of Spokane and a 2009 graduate of Ferris High School.

Air National Guard Airman Cerene Moorhead graduated from East Valley High School in 2007 and is the daughter of Bart and Tana Moorhead of Spokane Valley.

Air National Guard Airman James Waggener is the son of Leta Waggener of Spokane and graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 2004.

Air National Guard Airman Derek Reese is the brother of Aaron Reese of Spokane and a 2004 graduate of Medical Lake High School.

Air National Guard Airman Micah Sheets graduated in 1993 from Shadle Park High School and is the son of Michael Sheets of Spokane.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Matthew Little is the son of Robert Little of Spokane and Lorie Van Veen of Buckley, Wash., and a 2005 graduate of White River High School in Buckley.
