Area roundup: Small’s penalty kick lifts Vandals to victory
Sophomore Chelsea Small scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute Thursday to give Idaho (14-5, 5-2 Western Athletic Conference) a 2-1 win over visiting San Jose State.
Stephanie Righetti of the Spartans (10-7-1, 4-2-1) headed in a long free kick to tie the match 23 seconds before Small’s penalty-kick score.
Idaho’s Jill Flockhart, who assisted on Christina Boddie’s goal at 71 minutes, immediately took the ball downfield and was tackled from behind in front of the goal to set up Small’s kick.
Volleyball
Lauren Corp hit .455 with a match-high 17 kills as Saint Mary’s (15-6, 7-1 West Coast Conference) handed Gonzaga its 20th consecutive loss with a 3-1 decision at Martin Centre.
Denise Van de Mortel finished with 39 assists and 11 digs for GU (2-22, 0-8).
Hall of Fame
Twelve standouts from the early era of Community Colleges of Spokane athletics will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Spokane Falls SUB.
Phil Burkwist (Lewis and Clark), Wayne Ristau (Ferris), Dave McCarty (East Valley) and John Lopez (Burlington-Edison) were distance running standouts.
Six Sasquatch throwers will enter the hall, topped by shot put great Spike Walker (Battle Ground). Brad Nave (EV), Bill Hodgson (Richland), Sam Read (West Valley), Mark Crull-Neal (North Central) and Canadian Don Allemeersch are the others.
The class also includes baseball-basketball standouts Larry Heinz (NC) and Bob Burrows (Victoria, British Columbia).
Men’s basketball
Whitworth is ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, the recognized authority on NCAA Division III. The Pirates have played in four consecutive Division III tournaments.
Football
Former Spokane Shock defensive back Travis Williams joined the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.
Williams is the third Shock player to sign with the Lions.
